This page was designed to
provide you with useful tips and tricks when configuring and using Cytlok. If you have a
question that this section doesn't address, try checking the Cytlok Questions & Answers or Online Help pages.
When first configuring CYTLOK, begin with your
Internet applications such as browsers, E-mail programs and FTPs.HIDE all sensitive data such as financial and personal info that you do not
want anyone else to view from Windows®.
For executable virus protection, define all program (.exe)
files with the WRITE permission.
To determine which web sites are trying to read your files,
define sensitive areas with the READ permission to prompt a violation. If the files are
hidden, you cannot know that someone is trying to violate your system. Then you can use
the URL Blocker to prevent access to the hostile site.
ENCRYPT files that are sensitive, but ones you need to
remember exist. Remember, hidden files dont appear in Windows by default, so
its easy to forget they are there.
DENY all ports for an Internet application, then run the
application and ALLOW only those ports it needs to operate.
Do not HIDE the Windows or the Program Files directory.
When you click ALLOW on a first-time unauthorized network
connection, it will be automatically added to CYTLOK and inherit the default permission.
To keep others from using your programs, simply use the
EXECUTE permission on the selected application.
Marking a file CRITICAL creates a backup of the file marked,
so try to mark only small files to conserve disc space.
Remember to monitor the size of your log files, and clear
them as often as needed. There are many Java script-based browser programs that add data
to your log files during a refresh or update. These actions may cause your log files to
quickly grow in size.
When accessing the Internet, use different utilities, such as
Netscape Navigator. Often, one browser can exhibit different performance attributes over
another, depending on what other applications are running.
On ALLOW/DISALLOW, only ALLOW PERMANENT on major
applications, such as Netscape, Explorer, Excel, etc. (When an application is started,
there are many support executables that are launched that only require an ALLOW ONCE
privilege.) This keeps the number of applications in the database to a minimum. It also
lessons the visual confusion in the Application Window, because major applications will
have icons and support applications will not.
CYTLOK "Donts"
Dont HIDE the entire "C:"
drive. Remember, when you hide a file or directory, the Windows operating system cannot
see it. If it cannot see files it needs to run, it will crash!
Dont set up READ/WRITE/EXECUTE
attributes that keep an application from running. Selecting DISABLE LOGS allows you to
stop logging violations and network traffic when it is not necessary. An example of this
is when an application, such as an Internet-based data retrieval utility, is retrieving
information every "X" minutes. After a typical day, the Network Tracker Log will
have a large amount of data entry that is not useful to you. You can clear the logs by
simply selecting the Clear option when right-clicking in the Network Tracker Log
view.
